The Sariyya of Dhat al-Salasil took place shortly after the Battle of Mu'tah in the 8th year of Hijrah against the Quda'a tribe, which had aided the Ghassanids. It was named after a pond in the area.
The Prophet ﷺ appointed Amr ibn al-As رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ as the commander, despite him being a Muslim for only three months. Amr رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ initially felt insulted when the Prophet ﷺ mentioned the potential for ghanima, but the Prophet ﷺ reassured him that wealth is good if it is pure and in the hands of a righteous person. Amr رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ was given 300 men and ordered to launch a surprise attack. To maintain secrecy, he traveled only at night and forbade fires, despite the freezing cold.
Realizing 300 men were insufficient, Amr requested reinforcements. The Prophet ﷺ sent 200 more, including Abu Bakr رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ and Umar رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ, under the command of Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ. The Prophet ﷺ advised Abu Ubaydah رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ to avoid conflict with Amr رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ . Upon arrival, a dispute arose over leadership, particularly when leading prayer, but Abu Ubaydah رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ultimately deferred to Amr رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ .
With 500 men, Amr launched a surprise attack. The Quda'a tribe fled, leaving behind wealth, and the Muslims secured a major financial victory with minimal casualties. This operation solidified Muslim control over northern Arabia, ensuring future stability and leading some tribes to accept Islam.
